The Tangerang Journalists Association (GAWAT) strongly condemns the violence against several journalists while covering the sealing of the PT Genesis Regeneration Smelting (GRS) factory in the Cikande Industrial Estate, Serang Regency, Banten.
A number of journalists were allegedly attacked by thugs and are being arrested.
This could lead to unrest and crime.
The journalists, who were carrying out their duties, were intimidated and treated harshly, allegedly by security personnel from PT GRS.
These individuals included police officers and several individuals said to be from community organizations.
GAWAT Chairman Yanto emphasized that the violence against journalists constitutes a clear violation of press freedom and violates Law Number 40 of 1999 concerning the Press.
“We urge the police to act swiftly, thoroughly investigate, and arrest the perpetrators without discrimination. We must not let this case escalate,” he told internasionalpos.com.
GAWAT also reminded journalists that they are protected by law while carrying out their duties.
Therefore, law enforcement officials are obliged to provide security guarantees to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
“Violence against journalists is a serious threat to democracy and the public’s right to information.
If left unchecked, this could set a bad precedent,” he said.
GAWAT is currently coordinating with other press organizations to monitor this case until it is resolved and is urging all journalists in Banten
to unite and speak out against all forms of violence.
“We will not remain silent if authorities are slow to handle this case,” he concluded.
As a result of the incident, several journalists were injured and required hospitalization.
